This new computer is my first unibody mac and I’m very excited. It’s a sleek machine. I got the 15” with: Core i7 CPU 2.66 GHz, 4GB of RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HD, and 1680 x 1050 screen.
I ordered the day after it was announced. Why not day one?
I was really excited about this release and had been waiting to get a MacBook Pro. However, I didn’t order that day. I could get the same computer without the high res screen from Amazon for $200 less than from Apple. I slept on it and woke up, having decided I wanted the Hi-Res Glossy screen with 1680 x 1050 resolution, so I went with Apple. I didn’t choose antiglare because I wanted the edge to edge glass. Also with glossy, I think the color pops out better.
Tracking Delivery
I spent the next 24 hours watching the box travel here from Shanghai on the FedEx website. The brown box was soon at my door.
What MacBook Pro is this?
- 15” Core i7
- 2.66 GHz
- 4GB RAM
- 500 GB 7200 RPM HD
- Hi-Res Glossy Screen, 1680 x 1050
How does it compare to the last generation MacBook Pro?
- Same unibody design
- Graphic card upgrade
- Dual core i7 processor
- High resolution screen
- New power connector resembles Air connector
- 8-9 hour battery life
Unboxing the MacBook Pro box
The MacBook Pro box is well padded within the brown shipping box. Cardboard spacer corners hold it away from the edges. The box is in a plastic sheath (for waterproofing?).
Unboxing the MacBook Pro and Components from the Box
Black foam on top protects the computer. Just beneath is the computer. It feels solid and dense.
Under the computer, are the 85 Watt power charger and extension cords. I prefer to use the power with the extension cord, so I set that up right away. I find that plugging into outlets directly with the block gets in the way of other plugs.
The software package is in a black folder and reminds me of the iphone documentation, only bigger. It includes 2 disks, Apple stickers, and documentation.
Also included is a screen cleaning cloth, really necessary with these fingerprint-attracting hi-res screens. The computer comes fully charged and has most of the same ports. On the business end (left of keyboard) there is:
- Powercharger
- Ethernet
- Firewire 800
- Mini display adapter
- 2 usb
- SD card reader
- Line in microphone
- Speaker line out
First Power up
The screen is gorgeous, and to my relief, no dead pixels. The display really looks flawless. (Some users have reported a yellow tinting issue on the 17 inch.)
Originally, I wasn’t going to get the 7200 RPM drive, but since I decided to pay more for the high res screen I figured I might as well spend $50 more for the better drive. The 7200 RPM drive is silent, but initially seems not that much different than my old MacBook Pro with 5400 RPM.
Adjusting sound is easy, as with all new macs, and the speakers sound pretty good.
The keyboard is Apple’s now-standard QWERTY keyboard, sans numeric keypad.
I think they want to fit the full size keyboard on the 15″ which I can understand. I only wish they have the numeric keypad on the 17″ like many of the PC counterparts.
Upgrade in the future
Snow Leopard with Lightroom and Photoshop CS 5 eat up my 4GB pretty fast. I might upgrade soon to 8GB. If I do there will be a video for that!
