Quick Unboxing of Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5TB Hard Drive

This largest-capacity portable hard drive supports the new USB 3.0 interface and comes with a downlaodable copy of Star Trek.

I chose it because it has a modular cable design — so I can use it with multiple computers by leaving the cable attached and only the the drive with me.

Included with the Hard Drive, there is

  1. Paperwork, including
    1. Start guide
    2. Brochure to order more cables. It comes with USB 3.0.  Can order get firewire 800, USB 2.0 or eSATA
    3. Limited Warranty information
    4. Star Trek flyer (instruction for download the movie)
  2. A very short USB 3.0 interface. (about 1 foot).
  3. Removable GoFlex connector

*Note: Additional GoFlex connector cable can be purchased with USB 3.0, eSATA, and Firewire 800 interface

The Hard Drive itself comes in thick plastic packaging, very tightly packed and difficult to get off.

Separately, I bought Seagate’s FireWire 800 upgrade cable module which also comes with a very short cable.  I plan to leave the FireWire 800 connected to my mac

Observations

  • Interesting design because you can swap out the power module for other connections.  Odd that the Firewire isn’t detachable from the module like the USB 3.0 cable.
  • GoFlex connector gets a little warm during normal use, this is only an initial observation and I don’t know the impact in terms of long term usage
  • Comes with basic software package for both PC and Mac for backup, most noticeable is Paragon NTFS Driver for Mac.
  • This very small Hard Drive is thicker than my old 250 GB Western Digital

Please post thoughts and questions in the comments.  I would be happy to respond.
