Surprised by a Herman Miller Embody Chair
I came home from work to find a huge box labeled Herman Miller from Room and Board with my name on it. This gift was from my wife, who knew I had been wanting to get started on my home office improvement upgrade, and who knows me well enough that she had known a good place to start would be giving me a throne of sorts for my office, the best ergonomic chair I have experienced!.
After some work unwrapping packaging material and removing layers and layers of shrink wrap, I found that the item in the box was none other than the Herman Miller Embody Chair. It came 100% preassembled and looked terrific. She had special ordered the chair with reddish-orange fabric (called poppy) and a black body (white being the other choice) with the intent to give me not just a super chair, but also some color to my office. Nice!
Overcoming Herman Miller Price Sticker Shock
From the first look, this chair looks special and futuristic. It is a very nice piece of furniture for a modern office and everything on it seems quality, from the casters to the fabric to the special back. The Embody Chair’s spine-like back would look appropriate in any sci-fi show or high-rise modern office, I believe, and the wide arm rests stand out as well to me, providing useful additional surface area where I hadn’t previously thought it necessary. As such, this is a pricey chair.
I look at it this way: I’ve complained of back pain after working in every other chair I’ve sat in – including other Herman Miller chairs – and back pain is awful. Really awful. If I can get up from work or play off my Herman Miller Embody Chair for the next 12 years (the length of the warranty) and not have back pain, the cost divides up to $100 a year (less than 35 cents a day), and for my wife and me, that price is worth it.
My time spent at my desk is important. I can get more done working and be happier not working if I have a chair that supports my back right. So, yes, this is a pricey chair, but, if you are considering it, and if your back pain might be relieved by a better chair, this chair might be worth the price for you too.
Embody Chair Adjustments, Ergonomics Galore!
The Embody Chair has knobs and levers hidden around the base poking out in various directions. Happily, the box included very clear instructions to adjust my Herman Miller Embody Chair. From seat height to seat depth to tilt tension to back fit adjustment to arm height and width, this chair is really adjustable, more than any other chair I’ve had or used. I’m pretty thin and so I really appreciate this adjustability, having had problems getting comfortable in chairs far too big or wide for me.
After carefully going through the instructions and adjusting the chair to fit me, I am very impressed by the way it seems like the chair really supports my back without forcing it to conform to a shape. Rather, it feels a bit like my back is floating on air.
Trial and Review of Herman Miller Embody Chair Coming Soon
I will use my Embody Chair a lot for sure over the next few days and post back soon with my impressions about the chair.
If you have any suggestions or ideas about how to improve my home office, please let me know.
Thanks,
Super Gadget Guy
