Coffee Isn’t Enough: Unboxing Saeco Syntia Automatic Espresso Machine

Caffeine in the morning and throughout the day are key to my existence, so it is bewildering to me in retrospect that I chose an early morning pre-coffee to unbox my new Saeco Syntia espresso machine.

If you read my coffeemaker post from a couple weeks ago, you know that my Saeco Odea Go automatic espresso machine recently broke and so I got a Cuisinart DGB-650 hoping to replace it with good coffee and more than one cup at a time.  But that machine just couldn’t hold a candle to the quality of the coffee from my Saeco Odea, so I went back to Costco and picked up another Saeco, this time, the Syntia, a slightly fancier model, it appears, with a higher price to go right along with the fancy digital readout.

This machine is fully automatic.  You load the water and the beans and then you can make espresso (by pushing the button) until it runs out and then refill it and you’re good to go.

In the box, there is a quick start guide.  The machine comes with an Intenza water filter, which will hopefully keep the coffee maker working for longer. Next out of the box is a scoop/adjustment tool, a tray device that will go under the release spouts.  Also, 2 decent-sized booklets about the machine and food-grade grease.

It took a while to get the unit itself out of the box.  The machine is stainless steel and rather nice looking, compared to the Odea Go.  There is a digital screen bordered by 4 buttons at the top.  Below the screen is a dial for controlling the coffee strength.  The steamer and espresso release spouts turn down toward the tray.  The water and used coffee “cake” containers are smaller than the Odea Go and located in front, rather than on the sides of the Odea.  There is a removal device for preparing the coffee “cakes” on the right side (facing it) which looks identical to the one I had in the Odea.

On the very top of the machine is a reservoir for the full coffee beans, and also a welcome addition — a spout for adding pre-ground beans.

Another thing I noticed is that, unlike the Odea, the Syntia has a turn-off mechanism so you don’t have to worry about it staying on all day if you forget to turn it off.

I’ll be using the machine and I’ll post a review of the espresso it makes soon.

Thanks!
