I’d been thinking about getting a small interchangeable lens Sony camera.
The Leica M9 sounded amazing but it is too expensive for me right now. However, this little NEX-5N 16.1 Megapixel Sony camera is priced far more reasonably.
Having just recently been announced by Sony, I was surprised to find the NEX-5N at Best Buy so early. Although I would have preferred the black version, I couldn’t resist an early look at the new camera, so I bought it and brought it home.
The outside of the small box is full of impressive features…
· This camera boasts a tiltable 3 inch touch panel and a very high sensitivity sensor.
· It can take Full HD video.
· Included in the box are camera, lens, and a flash unit.
· 25 Point Autofocus
· 18-55 Kit Lens
I open the box and the first thing I see is a picture listing of the accessories available. Underneath that flap, there is a software disk and typical paperwork and manual. The camera, with lens attached, lies beneath in a white protective bag. There is a camera strap, USB cord, flash (in a little plastic case), the battery charger, huge compared to the flash, and the battery.
The camera, sporting an attractive “magnesium alloy body”, is mostly lens. The camera part of the camera is very small in size and weight compared to the lens. The zoom ring and focus ring turn easily, and the touch screen angles up and down easily also to enable taking pictures from different angles.
I take the lens off to expose the sensor and take a look at it. Nice. I think you can see it pretty clearly in the video of my unboxing on YouTube.
The camera supports memory stick and SD card.
I keep thinking that there is no wasted space whatsoever, particularly in the battery area on the right.
I set up the phone with date and time using the wheel. Now the fun starts. I really wanted to see the tracking feature (the screen keeps an object in focus once you tap it on the touch screen). This feature is quite impressive and it also comes through pretty well on the YouTube video.
I have a Canon DSLR and compared them side-by-side. The Sony seems heavier but is so much smaller and I’m already wishing I had it instead of the large Canon on my trip this summer!
I will charge up the NEX-5N and take lots of pictures. Soon, I’ll report back here with a review!
Thanks.
