Why I needed this
My wife likes to stream videos from her laptop while she’s cooking but she can barely hear her laptop speakers over the sizzling and oven fan. When she saw the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 in store, she wanted it immediately.
Unboxing
The Getting Started guide is pretty funny, showing you how to position it on your lap and how to plug in the USB cord. Seriously, if I needed that, how could I have even figured out how to get it out of the box? It reminds me of the instructions on peanut bags in airplanes: 1. Open. 2. Eat. All pretty much common sense.
Cross-Platform Functionality
Working with both PC and Mac, this Speaker Lapdesk is plug and play with no software to install. Like many other Lapdesks, it just plugs into the laptop with USB.

1. Better Design
The large surface space places controls under the right hand, with a cord clip on the right side of the laptop for the USB cord that powers the speakers and the fan. The controls are for Volume adjustment, mute, and the fan switch. The lapdesk is white on top, providing for a clean looking workspace and brown on the bottom so it doesn’t show dirt. It has flip-up stoppers so the laptop doesn’t slide off the slanted surface.
2. Cooling with the Built-in Fan
The fan is audible but not that bad. It seems to work fine. The on/off switch on top is unobtrusive and easy to use.
3. Ergonomic Comfort
The brown breathable mesh fabric and padding on the bottom are pretty nice and the design fits nicely over my lap, or even just on a table. The base angles the surface so the keyboard is angles down toward you on your lap, while the aforementioned stoppers and rubber “feet” help pad the laptop and keep it from slipping off.
4. Built-in Speakers
We all know how crappy laptop speakers can be and this is Logitech’s way to try to compensate for that, while allowing you to use the laptop in a more ergonomic fashion and keep the notebook cool. In my video, you can see my simple sound quality test of the full-stereo 2.0 speakers. I tested the lapdesk with both my 12″ Lenovo X200 and my 15″ MacBook Pro and was pretty impressed with the speakers. (The song is Miranda Lambert’s song Gunpowder and Lead.) There is a huge difference in speaker quality between the laptop speakers and the lapdesk speakers. The laptops are far more monotone and the sound has less depth. As you can hear in my video, the lapdesk is also louder and the sound quality is much better.
We will see how it holds up to use in the kitchen. So far, my wife is very happy with her Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700.
